So, you’ve recently earned a sweet backlink from a site.
Now what? Is it truly important enough to see changes to your authority and rankings?
We’ve been read over and over and over again that links are critical to search engine ranking.
But not all links are made equivalent. Some can even harm your site at scale.
There are tons of factors that decide the genuine value of a backlink. Factors that let you know the link you simply earned is Grade-A.
In this piece, I’ll go through some of (not every one of) these elements to assist you with deciding the value of your backlinks.
After earning your most recent link, the primary metric you should check is whether that link was from a unique root domain or not.
A unique root domain implies the link you simply got was from a site that hasn’t linked to your site before.
94% of all content online has zero backlinks.
So a couple backlinks from a similar root space won’t hurt you.
But if it’s everything you have, it’s a sign you have to step up your own effort and begin becoming proactive about link building to differentiate your profile.
Domain Rating (a term by means of Ahrefs), Domain Authority (a term through Moz), Authority Score (a term by means of SEMrush).
While named independently, they are basically calculations of something very similar.
A general score from 0-100 determined by numerous elements, mainly total backlinks, unique backlinks, and the overall authority of each of those backlinks.
In plain English: if a domain rating is high, the site has bunches of extraordinary links from lots of incredible websites. If a domain rating is low, the site has less links from less remarkable websites.
Is it a vanity metric?
To a degree, yes.
Anyway, does it make a difference?
Gaining a link from a gigantic site with a domain rating of 90+ can be a monstrous lift to your own site’s DR and trust signals.
Talking from years of experience in back linking for many customers in all niches, non-malicious links more than 50 in Ahrefs Domain Rating can significantly affect your own authority and trust.
Spam Score, coined by Moz, represent “the percentage of sites with similar features we’ve found to be penalized or banned by Google.”
Spam scores and link building are regularly talked about, and it’s very normal to hear that high spam scores = your site will get punished ASAP.
Unfortunately, that is not super accurate.
Directly from the mouth of Moz:
“Well established links, even with a higher Spam Score, can still add value and authority to your site.”
While having a whole link profile of madly spammy sites is plainly awful, having some websites with high spam scores isn’t.
The rules set by Moz are:
When you secure another backlink, checking its worth is the first thing you should do.
Evaluate unique root domains, domain rating, spam scores, organic traffic, anchor text, and the mention setting.
While there are more factors, these are probably the most significant.
Practically all links are valuable to your general profile, but some are more important than others.
